New Year, New Stitches

New Year, New Stitches

January always feels like a clean slate, doesn’t it? The rush of December is behind us, the evenings are still cosy, and there’s something comforting about settling down with a hook, some yarn, and a fresh idea. At The Left Hookery, January is all about slowing down, learning something new, and enjoying the process of improving our crochet skills -one stitch at a time.

Whether you’re brand new to crochet or have been hooking for years, this is the perfect month to focus on the basics. Practising tension, mastering stitches you tend to avoid, or finally understanding that pattern that’s been sitting in your favourites since last year can make a huge difference to your confidence. Small improvements add up quickly, and before you know it, your crochet feels smoother and more natural.

Learning doesn’t have to mean pressure or perfection. January crochet is about curiosity - trying a new stitch, experimenting with different yarns, or even unpicking and starting again (we’ve all been there!). Every project teaches us something, and even the wonky ones help us grow.

If you’re setting gentle goals for the year ahead, why not make them crochet-friendly? Things like:

  • Practising for a few minutes each day

  • Learning one new stitch or technique a month

  • Finishing a project just for fun

  • Crocheting without comparing your work to others

Most importantly, remember that crochet is meant to be enjoyable. There’s no rush, no deadlines, and no “right” way - just your way.
